Larry Quick, Resilient Futures’ CEO and founder stresses that all operating and business models are already under attack and too few organisations are robustly prepared to respond to, let alone actively leverage disruption.
This week, Resilient Futures released their second book on disruption – The Disruption Readiness Test. The book is a companion to Disrupted: Strategy for Exponential Change and emerged from collective experiences of working with corporations, not-for-profits, governments and communities, many of who are already dealing with disruption in one form or another. Research was also drawn from the research conducted in the course of this work and from the insights gleaned from Resilient Futures’ Disruption Report 2016.
The Disruption Readiness Test explores five thresholds of disruption readiness that can be used to clearly assess whether an organisation is positioned to leverage disruption as a tailwind rather than be buffeted its headwinds. They are:
- A commitment at all levels of the organisation to leverage disruption.
- An aligned view of disruption and its current, imminent and potential impacts.
- A robust strategy focussed on leveraging disruption.
- The capability and resources to leverage disruption.
- The strength of disruption readiness of key customers and suppliers.
“In other words, disruption readiness is about more than simply knowing that disruption is real and having a sense of what some of our current disruptors are. It is about recognising that one organisation’s disruption is another’s innovation and being prepared to do something about it. It is about positioning disruption as core to the work that people are doing and not as something that sits on the periphery.” Said Mr Quick.
Disruption readiness is about making sure that identifying potential disruptors and doing something about them is the responsibility of everyone – from the board-level to the “coal-face”. It is also about ensuring that people are genuinely empowered to act as strategic leaders – regardless of their title or status. And, it is about recognising that no organisation is an island and that the impacts of disruption can be systemic, viral and exponential. If your network is vulnerable, then so are you.
Ultimately, being disruption ready is about asking and answering, honestly, tough questions of yourself, your colleagues and your organisation. To help organisations address those questions, The Disruption Readiness Test is accompanied by the new online tool of the same name – The Disruption Readiness Test or, the DRT.
Described as “the ultimate organisational stress test for our times”, the DRT is a free, confidential, online, 10-minute self-assessment of an organisation’s disruption readiness. Upon completing the test, individuals receive a confidential score which represents their view of their organisation’s disruption readiness against each of the five thresholds as well as a cumulative score. Once someone completes the DRT, what they do next is entirely up to them, but The Disruption Readiness Test and Disrupted: Strategy for Exponential Change both offer concrete ideas about steps that can be taken to ensure that leveraging disruption is not only possible but also a priority.
The DRT is designed to be taken repeatedly so that individuals can keep track of their organisation’s progress against each threshold. It is also possible to arrange for group disruption readiness testing which maintains the confidentiality of individual responses while also producing an aggregated group score against each threshold as well as in total.
Resilient Futures challenges people to take the Disruption Readiness Test and then use that knowledge to empower them to do something other than ignore it and hope it will go away, deny that it is happening, retreat to the past and do what they thought worked then, promote unrealistic options for dealing with change.
“Disruption will test you. Are you ready to think ahead, embrace complexity, anticipate disruption and harness the change that is already happening to create a new, desired future?” asks Quick.
