The Disruption Report 2016: What Australian Business Leaders Think

In the summer of 2015/16, Resilient Futures asked Australian business leaders for their views about disruption with a specific focus on:

The forthcoming 2016 report on Australian Disruption

  • Their understanding of disruption — both digital and beyond
  • The level of disruption they are already experiencing (both positive and negative)
  • The opportunities and risks they see in disruption
  • Their level of preparedness for future disruption

This survey comes on the back of Larry Quick and David Platt’s book - Disrupted: Strategy for Exponential Change, and provides current data about the disruption that organisations are currently experiencing, and what their leaders think the future may hold.

More than 280 business leaders shared their views with us on this important topic and a number of overarching patterns emerged in their responses.

The survey revealed many rich insights and you might be interested to examine your perspective on disruption in the context of your peers’. For instance:

  • Disruption from non-technology factors (e.g. attacks on business models, economic downturn, global competition) are as concerning as those impacts from digital and broader technologies.
  • Leaders know that greater disruption is coming, but are unsure as to where and when it will specifically impact them.
  • Two in six leaders are vested in leveraging disruption. One in six are experiencing major negative effects from disruption.
  • The "don’t know" response on disruptors suggests that many leaders are unaware of a variety of disruptors, the impact on their organisation and how they could leverage them. In short: they don’t know what they don’t know.
