LEADING 2023: Strategic Leadership for Disruptive Change

Stay at the Forefront of Disruptive Change in 2023 & Beyond: Sync robust planning, leadership & value generation in disruptive change

Change is no longer linear. It is going exponential! Are YOU READY to Lead in Disruptive Change?

“In today’s era of volatility, there is no other way but to re-invent. The only sustainable advantage you can have over others is agility, that’s it. Because nothing else is sustainable, everything else you create, somebody else will replicate.” — Jeff Bezos, AMAZON Founder.

We are in a NEW era. Society is facing unprecedented change. As we grapple with the most recent wave of technology and the accelerating adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GAI), we are also still debating its opportunities and risks, ethical implications, and potential existential threats. This comes amidst severe climate events, chaotic energy transition, and ongoing economic and geopolitical instability.

The systemic and exponential nature of change is evident and experienced daily. The weak signals are becoming stronger, and we are likely at the elbow of an exponential shift – across a plethora of systems.

If you swap ‘Generative AI’ in the diagram above with any of the multiple forms of disruptive change present in our current reality then Bezos' assertion rings true. When technology is moving at light speed, its impact is compounded through multiple additional systemic disruptions. Slow-to-change organisations cannot keep up and opportunities are created for others. Any gaps in this global environment are quickly filled by organisations with more flexibility, agility, speed and appetite to adapt.

Nearly 30 years ago, Jeff Bezos started upending business models. He connected concepts and leveraged technology and whilst many of the bigger, (initially book and later department), stores had the capabilities and resources to do the same thing they got stuck in what we describe as Managed Adaptive Decline (MAD). In effect, MAD organisations try to adapt the old model to the new conditions rather than thinking ahead and creating a model that will be valued in the future. Whilst the incumbent players contemplated making the old processes more profitable, they lagged and opened the door for disruption and disruptors: queue the birth of Amazon.

Replace Jeff Bezos with Sam Altman and we have the same thing happening again – but this time with GAI. ChatGPT and a myriad of other GAI products and platforms are breaking down barriers to entry for many industries, shaking up traditional systems and business models. Where organisations have leaders without fit for purpose skills to change and pivot quickly  in disruptive conditions they can be left in MAD. Unable to effectively navigate in the chaotic conditions that disruptive change can bring.  Are you ready to Lead in Disruptive Change?

Do you, your colleagues and your people have the leadership mindset and toolset to make sense of what disruptive change means for your organisation?

Understand Effective Leadership in Disruptive Change.

To be at the FOREFRONT of this new change landscape your leaders at all levels (Board, Executives, Managers, and your emerging talent) should be armed with the tools to help them LEAD in disruptive change and to:

  1. Make sense of and keep pace with this new reality.

  2. Safeguard your organisation against risks from rapidly changing conditions whilst also uncovering and prioritising new opportunities.

  3. Evaluate current processes and systems (think annual planning exercises, setting KPIs, etc.) to enable the agility and innovation needed to act NOW!

  4. Unlock the right conversations internally and externally (around the boardroom table, with your people, and with your key value partners) to remain competitive.

When change cycles are shorter and uncertainty more prevalent, leaders need new thinking and tools. They also need to uplift their people and broaden strategic leadership so the whole organisation is on the same page. This emboldens people to be innovative and uncovers any blind spots that could expose your organisation to disruption.

In increasingly complex and rapidly changing environments, the risks of failing to adapt are significant. Organisational resilience can only be achieved when leaders take proactive steps to secure ongoing relevance and value in the face of continuous, disruptive change.

Strategy in Action (SiA) is a mindset and a toolset that supports individuals and organisations to reinvent and reset, make sense of the complex, discover untapped potential, foster innovation, invest in the right capabilities and empower their teams to thrive. It is a fit for purpose framework designed explicitly for disruptive change & building strategic leadership across organisations, teams, and individuals.

SiA provides answers to critical questions like:

1. What operating conditions will we face in 2023 and beyond?

2. Within those conditions, what opportunities and risks will we meet?

3. Accounting for those opportunities & risks, what sustainable value will we generate?

4. What capabilities will we need to deliver such value?

5. What is the most efficient & effective action to take to access & optimise those conditions?

Missing any of these questions in a 2023 strategy or plan is a significant risk. Don’t be left exposed, learn how you and your team can lead in disruptive change.
